Abstract:
These data show the location of all extant lighthouses and lights on the coastline of Massachusetts. While many of the lighthouses represented are active aids to navigation maintained by the United States Coast Guard, others are not and are maintained privately. All lighthouses are shown in their current positions and may have been moved from their original location.
These data were updated on November 10, 2009 to include lights indentified by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
Purpose:
These data were created to show the location of all extant lighthouses on the coastline of Massachusetts.

Attribute accuracy was tested by manually comparing the relative locations of features using National Geodetic Survey ground control locations, MassGIS 2001 ortho photos, NOAA nautical charts, and Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) coordinates.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All features located using National Geodetic Survey data are accurate to the extent that the survey data itself is accurate. All features with the TYPE attribute of "Light" were mapped using the coordinates from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) <http://geonames.usgs.gov/>, developed by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, and were compared to 2009 NOAA nautical charts to make sure they are current aids to navigation. All other features were located using NOAA nautical charts and the MassGIS 2001 ortho photos. These features are, at minimum, accurate to the level of the largest-scale NOAA chart that identifies the feature.
Because only those lights from GNIS shown on NOAA nautical charts were included, it was assumed that all of the lighthouses added from the GNIS dataset were active aids to navigation (attribute: USE). For the NRHP attribute (an attribute describing whether or not a feature is listed on the National Register of Historic Places), a value of "n/a" was given to the lights identified by GNIS. CZM did not check to see if these lights were listed on the National Register, but it is highly likely that they are not listed.
Completeness_Report:
All extant lighthouses listed on the National Park Service Marine Heritage Program's Inventory of Historic Light Stations: Massachusetts Lighthouses website (<http://www.cr.nps.gov/MARITIME/light/ma.htm>) and the United States Coast Guard's Historic Light Station Information & Photography: MASSACHUSETTS website (<http://www.uscg.mil/history/weblighthouses/LHMA.asp>) were located. Any additional lighthouses identified by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) that were also shown as lights on NOAA nautical charts were included. Those lights that appear on NOAA nautical charts but are not identified on the Maritime Heritage Program, U.S. Coast Guard, or GNIS websites were not included.

Lighthouse names and general locations were compiled from the following two websites: National Park Service Marine Heritage Program (<http://www.cr.nps.gov/MARITIME/light/ma.htm>) and the Coast Guard Historic Light Station Information & Photography: MASSACHUSETTS (<http://www.uscg.mil/history/weblighthouses/LHMA.asp>). Since most lighthouses serve as survey control stations maintained by National Geodetic Survey (see <http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl>), individual lighthouses were geographically located by plotting their coordinates in a GIS. For those lighthouses that do not serve as survey control stations, their geographic location was determined by "on screen digitization" of the most large-scale NOAA chart for the region. These latter points were then overlaid on the 2001 Massachusetts ortho imagery. When the digitized point and the location of the lighthouse on the ortho photo differed, the point was moved to match the ortho photo. All points were given a final check by comparing their locations to the ortho photos.

Several edits were made to the lighthouses originally included in this dataset ("TYPE" = "Lighthouse"):
In the earlier version of this dataset, a control point for a previous location of Cape Poge (Pogue) Light was used to map its location. This lighthouse was moved to match its location on the MassGIS 2001 ortho imagery.
The Nantucket Cliff Range light was relocated to match its location on the MassGIS 2001 ortho photos. A second beacon that is part of the range lights was also added.
Clark's Point Light, a lighthouse included on the United States Coast Guard Historic Light Station Information & Photography: MASSACHUSETTS website (<http://www.uscg.mil/history/weblighthouses/LHMA.asp>), was added to the dataset:
Dumpling Rock Light and Ipswich Range Light (Rear Range), two deactivated lighthouses that have been replaced by lights on skeleton towers and are included on the U.S. Coast Guard website, were mapped and added to the dataset.
Several lighthouses were renamed to match the names on the Maritime Heritage Program and/or Coast Guard websites: "Great Point Light" was renamed "Great Point (Nantucket) Light." "Front Range Light" was renamed "Newburyport Harbor Range Light (Front Range)." "Rear Range Light" was renamed "Newburyport Harbor Range Light (Rear Range)."
The NRHP attribute, an attribute describing whether or not a feature is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was added. The National Park Service Maritime Heritage Program website and/or the National Register of Historic Places database (<http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/>) were used to fill out this field.

Lighthouses indentified by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) that were not previously part of this dataset were mapped and added to the dataset. The mapped points were compared to NOAA nautical charts and those lights from GNIS that were not on or near a light on a NOAA nautical chart were removed. Several lights identified by GNIS were edited and moved to align with the light location on a NOAA chart or MassGIS 2001 ortho photo.
The "TYPE" attribute was added to identify the light stations that were added from the GNIS dataset ("TYPE" = "Light"). All other features that were part of the previous version of this dataset were given a "TYPE" attribute of "Lighthouse."
Because only those lights from GNIS that were shown on NOAA nautical charts were included, it was assumed that all of the lighthouses added from the GNIS dataset were active aids to navigation (attribute: USE). A value of "n/a" was given to the lights added from GNIS for the NRHP attribute (an attribute describing whether or not a feature is listed on the National Register of Historic Places). CZM did not check to see if these lights were listed on the National Register, but it is highly likely that they are not listed.
