Description:

Abstract:: These data give the location of all environmental monitoring buoy stations in Gulf of Maine and southern New England waters present in the National Data Buoy Center (<http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/>) as of June 21, 2006. These buoys and stations are operated variously by the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System, National Data Buoy Center, National Ocean Service, and the University of Connecticut Dept. of Marine Science. All points are hot linked to the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) where real-time and recorded environmental data may be downloaded.
Purpose:: These data were created to provide the location of all environmental monitoring buoy stations in Gulf of Maine and southern New England waters for inclusion in the Massachusetts Ocean Resource Information System (MORIS).

Process_Description:

The latitude and longitude of all environmental monitoring buoy stations in Gulf of Maine and southern New England waters present in the National Data Buoy Center (<http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/>) were copied into a .dbf table and imported into ArcGIS June 21, 2006. The data were checked for gross positional inaccuracies and the projected to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (FIPS zone 2001), meters.

Entity_Type_Definition:: NDBC provides hourly observations from a network of about 90 buoys and 60 Coastal Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) stations. All stations measure wind speed, direction, and gust; barometric pressure; and air temperature. In addition, all buoy stations, and some C-MAN stations, measure sea surface temperature and wave height and period. Conductivity and water current are measured at selected stations.
