Abstract:

This datalayer consists of points from five distinct permitted artificial reefs within the territorial waters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This layer contains site specific information relating to the reef’s layout, material locations and boundary points. Reefs are utilized by commercial fishers and recreational anglers, scuba divers, and planners. For more information about MA DMF’s Artificial Reef Program please see http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/dfg/dmf/programs-and-projects/artificial-reefs.html. These data are complete to the specifications of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. Most individual unit deployments are represented. A unit may consist of multiple objects such as a cluster of cobbles, tires, or concrete debris. Yarmouth reef was deployed in 1978. Dartmouth reef deployed in 1994. Sculpin Ledge reef deployed in 1997. HubLine reef deployed in 2006. Harwich reef deployed in 2016. Yarmouth and Harwich permits are currently (12/2016) open to accept additional materials.

Purpose:

The intended use of these data are to support diverse activities including planning, management, maintenance, research and interpretation. Creation of artificial habitat can be an effective method of increasing productivity, providing additional recreational and commercial fishing opportunities, and enhancing the forage base, i.e., provide attachment substrate for blue mussels and habitat for finfish; settlement, forage, and shelter habitat for lobster; and habitat for several life-stages of winter flounder.

These data were not evaluated for positional accuracy. Position data (latitude and longitude) for submerged structures are recorded in the field using navigational GPS from an ocean surface vessel. Position accuracy error may include variation due to tidal amplitude, water depth at the site, surface vessel movement at time of position recording, and GPS error. Typical method for collecting position data for fixed objects on the bottom involves divers positioning a weighted line with a buoy on or near the desired location on the sea floor, At the sea surface, vessel operators position the vessel at the float, tighten the line to remove excess scope and record location when the line is determined to be in a vertical direction to the bottom. Position data for fixed permit boundary reference points are compiled from engineered plans for MA Department of Environmental Protection Ch91 Waterways Licenses, issued individually for each permitted artificial reef site and recorded with the Registry of Deeds.

Process step 1: Original data were converted form Degrees, Minutes to Decimal Degrees (latitude/ longitude geographic coordinates) and entered into an Excel spreadsheet. Fields were created to provide information to the user in a GIS. The spreadsheet was saved as a dBase file (DBF) and added to the list of tables in an ArcView 3.X project. The data was then added as an Event Theme in ArcView and coverted to a shapefile. The ArcToolbox Define Projection Wizard was used to define the shapefile's coordinate system--Geographic, NAD 1927. The ArcToolbox Project Wizard was used to reproject the coordinates to State Plane, Massachusetts Mainland, NAD 1983, Meters.
