Process_Description:: Two basemaps were used in each workshop. One was dedicated for mapping recreational boating uses. The other was for commercial uses. Chris Spagnuolo facilitated expert discussions and mapping of recreation boat uses while Chris Hansen facilitated concurrently for commercial uses. A unique color pen was assigned to each boat use type. As experts drew features on the map, the facilitator placed the expert's initials on the mapped points, lines, and polygons. Ben Yetman assisted as a scribe for comments and feature attributes.
The experts found it easier to map by going through the boat use list one-by-one rather than going through the list of questions. The informal portion of the mapping exercise ensued while drawing features. Discussions of several related topics evolved while facilitators maintained mapping focus and the assessment of seasonality, intensity, and trends directly related to the map features.
Generally, experts reviewed the map features drawn by participants of earlier sessions and supplemented them with their own specific information. While experts focused on their areas of expertise, they were specifically solicited for their knowledge of other boat uses. This helped supplement and quality assure information provided by other experts.

Process_Description:: Edge Matching and Boundaries: the shoreline used for this project (MassGIS 1:25K shoreline) established the inland-side boundary for map features. The state waters' boundary served as the water-side bounds unless uses extended into federal waters.

Process_Description:: Use of Planning Units: In open water areas where boating use must be approximated by the meeting attendees, the planning units were offered as the "minimum mapping unit." This suggests that areas of uncertain boundaries were identified as a cluster of planning units (the entire unit is either "selected" or "not selected" for contributing to that use type). However, if the expert felt comfortable drawing a discrete polygon to better represent a feature, they were encouraged to do so.

Process_Description:: Synthesis of Hand-drawn Data: It was expected that the mass of hand-drawn map features on the basemaps would require some manual synthesis and segregation of discrete layers prior to digitizing in to GIS. The workshop facilitators were to take responsibility of clarifying the map features by translating them onto a clean map surface prior to digitizing them.

Process_Description:: For commercial uses, Chris Hansen of TerraLogic completed the final synthesis maps. For recreation uses, Chris Spagnuolo of TerraLogic created the final maps.
Generally, data synthesis was a straight forward process of adjusting the experts' manually-drawn features to the appropriate shoreline. There were several undisputed features such as commercial shipping lanes and ferry routes that needed simple verification. The categories of recreational boating and commercial charter boating areas were more difficult to synthesize. On these two layers, a lot of anecdotal information had to be compiled as map features. Because of the required level of interpretation on these feature layers, it was recommended that CZM internally review the maps prior to final submittal.
