Description:

Abstract:

This dataset includes more than 1,800 publically accesible sites along the Massachusetts coast that are owned by government agencies and nonprofits and open to the public. It includes beaches, rocky coasts, shore-side parks, public boat ramps, harbor walks, coves, marshes and creeks, overlooks, islands (some that are only accessible by boat), and rights-of-way. The dataset does not include properties with conservation restrictions, or unknown or contested ownership or boundaries. Landlocked areas that can only be accessed over private property are also excluded from this dataset. This dataset is mapped using MassGIS parcel data to reflect actual property boundaries of the access sites.

Purpose:

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is committed to helping the public enjoy the coastline, and providing an approachable platform for users to discover access locations. This dataset attempts to map all of the coastal public access sites across the Coastal Zone of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The data are designed for public use in the Coast Guide Online Story Map created by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. The Coast Guide Online Story Map serves as a platform for sharing locations of publically accessible coastal sites with the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond.

Supplemental_Information:

This dataset reflects CZM's current knowledge of coastal public access sites as reflected in the last update. As CZM becomes aware of changes to coastal public access sites such as changes in ownership, managers, boundaries, or creation it will work to update the dataset.

Completeness_Report:

The dataset represents coastal public access sites for the Commonwealth of Massachsetts only. Coastal public access sites are defined as any publicaly accessible place where coastal waters, habitat, or wildlife can be enjoyed or observed. Only the municipalities which contain these coastal resources were mapped. With the exception of some small non-profit organizations, the data are believed to be a complete inventory of publicaly accessible coastal access points.

These data were mapped using parcel boundary datasets and assessed for accuracy using satellite imagery and site visits. Each site reflects the boundary lines of the most recent release of the MassGIS Level 3 Assessors' Parcel Mapping, unless more accurate maps were available (For example; trail maps or boundary maps produced by the owner or manager of the property). In some instances, local knowledge was used to draw or adjust the boundary lines of the coastal public access sites. As the MassGIS Level 3 Assessor Parcel Mapping data are updated, this dataset will be checked against it and updated where necessary.

Checked the MassGIS Assessor Parcel dataset to locate all state, federal, municpal or non-profit owned parcels in the Massachusetts Coastal Zone. These data were compared to the older CZM Coastal Public Access Sites dataset to locate missing coastal public access sites and/or sites that may have been misidentified. Comparison of the dataset against aerial imagery and other locally produced maps was used to correct boundary lines.
