Abstract:
These vector point data represent the risers and diffuser caps that extend from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) outfall tunnel that transports treated effluent from the Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant to Massachusetts Bay, its receiving waters.
Effluent is discharged through 55 individual diffuser pipes, or risers, each with eight small ports, so that rapid and thorough mixing into surrounding water is achieved and water quality standards are not compromised by the discharge. Risers (150 feet in height) transfer effluent from the Deer Island outfall tunnel, set in bedrock approximately 350 feet below mean sea level, to diffuser heads.
More than 400 diffuser ports disperse the effluent into the 100-feet deep waters in the Bay, where the effluent mixes with large volumes of seawater to achieve very low concentrations of any contaminants that remain after secondary treatment. The initial dilution of the effluent at the new location will be about 100 to 1, far greater than the 14 to 1 dilution achieved at the old 30-feet deep outfall in Boston Harbor.
Purpose:
These data provide the approximate locations of risers and diffuser caps that extend from the MWRA outfall tunnel. They are intended to support diverse activities including planning, management, maintenance, research and analysis. They are not intended for navigational purposes.
