Abstract:
These boundaries are simplified from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Real Estate Interest data layer containing polygons representing tracts of land (parcels) in which the Service has a real estate interest. Interior boundaries between parcels were dissolved to produce a single set of simplified external boundaries for each feature. These are resource grade mapping representations of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service boundaries. For legal descriptions of the land represented here, contact the USFWS Realty Office. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although these boundaries represent lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, not all areas are open to the public. Some fragile habitats need to be protected from human traffic and some management areas are closed. The public is urged to contact specific Refuges or other conservation areas before visiting.
Purpose:
This data set depicts simplified boundaries of lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service including National Wildlife Refuges, National Fish Hatcheries, FWS administrative sites, and other conservation areas.
Supplemental_Information:
The FwsInterest feature class is an aggregated data layer derived by appending separate regional feature data sets into a single national data set that represents land and waters that USFWS has acquired a real estate interest in. (FwsInterest is available at: <http://www.fws.gov/GIS/data> ) This data set is a simplified version of the FwsInterest feature class. The spatial and positional accuracy of this information will vary depending on the original source data and methods utilized. All data sources are not listed in this document but are maintained regionally and are available upon request. We strive to improve the accuracy of this data and incorporate more reliable information when available. Data depicting easement lands in Region 6, the Mountain-Prairie Region, is not included in the FwsInterest feature class as it does not represent the acreage of wetland or grassland resources included in the easement contracts. This data set does not distinguish Refuges or other areas that are open to the public from those that are closed to the public for any reason. The public is urged to contact specific Refuges for information about public access.

6. The data were downloaded from Data.gov (<http://catalog.data.gov/dataset/fws-simplified-boundaries>) by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management on April 22, 2015. In ArcGIS, the data were selected by attributes to select National Wildlife Refuges located in Massachusetts using the following expression: "ORGNAME" = 'ASSABET RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'GREAT MEADOWS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'MASHPEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'MASSASOIT NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'MONOMOY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'NANTUCKET NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'NOMANS LAND ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'OXBOW NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'PARKER RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'SILVIO O. CONTE NATIONAL FISH AND WILDLIFE REFUGE' OR "ORGNAME" = 'THACHER ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE'. The selected features were projected to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (FIPS zone 2001), meters. Since the Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge is located in multiple states, the data were selected by location to select features that intersect Massachusetts towns. The selection was switched and the selected features were deleted. Finally, the features were dissolved based on the ORGNAME, ORGCODE, RSL_TYPE, and FWSREGION fields.
