Abstract:
This GIS layer shows the Hibernia Atlantic submarine fiber-optic cable in the Gulf of Maine. The cable is approximately 463 miles long and runs from Hibernia Atlantic's Canada cable landing station in Halifax, Nova Scotia to their US cable landing station in Lynn, Massachusetts. This cable is part of a larger network that provides a direct connection for the US and Canada to Ireland and the UK. The GIS layer represents the cable location as laid in the seabed in 2001.
Purpose:
The original data were collected by Hibernia Atlantic to track the plow and cable location during installation. CZM provides these data for planning purposes.

The data are stored as one simple line feature with two user-defined attributes: ID and OWNER. Attributes were manually checked for accuracy.

The data were created from a route position list (RPL) which in turn was created from the raw plow data acquired from the ship during cable installation. Plow position was recorded every few seconds. The plow has sensors on it, which allowed the ship to track the position of the plow to within a few centimeters. The ship itself used DGPS for its position.
