Abstract:
This GIS vector data layer shows lateral boundaries between Massachusetts and adjoining states (New Hampshire and Rhode Island). Lateral boundaries are here defined as boundaries between Massachusetts and adjoining states that extend seaward from land to the limit of state jurisdiction at the Submerged Lands Act Boundary (approximately 3 nautical miles). The data were created from two MassGIS data layers (see Process Steps) and do not represent official boundaries of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Official boundaries are maintained by the Massachusetts Highway Dept. but are not maintained in a GIS format. These data were created by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management on June 19, 2008. The information available in this data layer CANNOT be used to determine the definitive location of Massachusetts's lateral boundaries. Official boundaries can only be obtained from the Massachusetts Highway Dept.

Two MassGIS layers were used to create the lateral offshore boundary between Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The landward side of the boundary lines were derived from the "Community Boundaries (Towns) from Survey Points - June 2004 (last update December 2007) layer. The seaward terminus of the boundary line was derived from the "Community Boundaries (Towns) Without Coast - October 2002" layer. The landward and seaward points were connected with a straight line that was terminated on the seaward side at the intersection of the Minerals Management Service "Digital Offshore Cadastre (DOC) - Atlantic83 - Submerged Lands Act (SLA) Boundary Line."
