Abstract:
This dataset includes existing aquaculture license sites and aquaculture development areas (ADAs) that overlap with the Massachusetts Ocean Management Planning Area. An ADA is a large aquaculture license site secured by a town under MGL, Chapter 130 which is then subdivided into smaller individual license sites upon application to the town holding the ADA license (individual licensees still need to apply to the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries [DMF] for a state permit for the possession of seed shellfish). There is one ADA in Provincetown and Truro; an ADA may not have active aquaculture activity over the whole licensed area. The existing aquaculture license sites include active, inactive, and previously approved but never active sites. All of the existing aquaculture license sites are for shellfish aquaculture only. Active aquaculture license sites that overlap the planning area boundary are in the towns of Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Chilmark, West Tisbury, Orleans, Eastham, and Wellfleet. All but one of these (Chilmark) are inshore licenses that extend more than 1,500 feet from shore so they overlap into the planning area. One offshore site in Cape Cod Bay is linked to an inshore license holder, but it is not currently producing shellfish. One offshore site in Buzzards Bay and one in Vineyard Sound had aquaculture licenses issued previously but no activity occurred (so the license sites are no longer active). There are several hundred additional aquaculture license sites inshore of the planning area boundary which are not included in this dataset.
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
Supplemental_Information:
The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan protects critical marine habitat and important water-dependent uses and sets standards for new ocean-based development. In response to the Oceans Act of 2008, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) issued the original ocean plan in December 2009. The Oceans Act requires EEA to review and update the ocean plan at least once every five years. The 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, released on January 6, 2015, is the first formal amendment to the 2009 ocean plan. These data were produced to support the development of the 2015 ocean plan.
