Abstract:
These data represent the concentrated recreational boating concentrations of water-dependent use area mapped in the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan. This layer was developed using data from the 2010 Massachusetts Recreational Boater Survey conducted by SeaPlan and partners, the 2012 Northeast Recreational Boater Survey conducted by SeaPlan and partners, and a 2013 rapid assessment survey of experienced mariners by Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA). In the 2010 survey, respondents plotted over 1,000 of their boating routes in Massachusetts state waters from May to October 2010. Building off the 2010 survey, SeaPlan conducted a similar survey in 2012 for the Northeast. Boaters mapped over 1,000 routes in Massachusetts state waters between May and October 2012. In the MMTA survey, mariners marked charts with routes commonly used by recreational boaters in Massachusetts. Over 500 routes were mapped through this survey. The recreational boating routes from the three surveys were combined and used to create a map of recreational boating route density, and the top 50% of route density in the planning area was extracted and mapped as the concentrations of water-dependent use area.
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
Supplemental_Information:
The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan protects critical marine habitat and important water-dependent uses and sets standards for new ocean-based development. In response to the Oceans Act of 2008, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) issued the original ocean plan in December 2009. The Oceans Act requires EEA to review and update the ocean plan at least once every five years. The 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, released on January 6, 2015, is the first formal amendment to the 2009 ocean plan. These data were produced to support the development of the 2015 ocean plan.

Ran the Line Density tool in ArcGIS to calculate the line density of the merged the 2010, 2012, and 2013 recreational boating routes that fall within a 675-meter search radius of each 250 x 250-m grid cell in the North Atlantic. The 250 x 250-m cell size was selected to be consistent with the grid used in the 2009 ocean plan. The search radius was selected based on the accuracy of the chart basemap used in the mapping tool for the 2010 and 2012 surveys, which is ±675 meters.
