Abstract:
The 2009 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan did not incorporate data that quantified the visual impacts of wind energy facilities, but the plan recognized the importance of such information. The ocean plan provided additional information to assist the project-specific review of potential visual impacts associated with a wind energy facility. Although no wind energy facilities have been developed in the last five years within the planning area, the Recreational and Cultural Services Work Group recommended updating the additional information in the 2015 ocean plan. This dataset illustrates sites on the National Register of Historic Places at which specific visual assessments might be required. From the National Park Service website: "The National Park Service administers the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is the official Federal list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture. National Register properties have significance to the history of their community state, or the nation. Nominations for listing historic properties come from State Historic Preservation Officers, from Federal Preservation Officers for properties owned or controlled by the United States Government, and from Tribal Historic Preservation Officers for properties on Tribal lands. Private individuals and organizations, local governments, and American Indian tribes often initiate this process and prepare the necessary documentation. A professional review board in each state considers each property proposed for listing and makes a recommendation on its eligibility. National Historic Landmarks are a separate designation, but upon designation, NHLs are listed in the National Register of Historic Places if not already listed." This dataset only contains properties listed prior to the beginning of 2007.
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
Supplemental_Information:
The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan protects critical marine habitat and important water-dependent uses and sets standards for new ocean-based development. In response to the Oceans Act of 2008, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) issued the original ocean plan in December 2009. The Oceans Act requires EEA to review and update the ocean plan at least once every five years. The 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, released on January 6, 2015, is the first formal amendment to the 2009 ocean plan. These data were produced to support the development of the 2015 ocean plan.

From the National Park Service website: Google Earth layers from properties listed on the National Register are divided by region of the country as determined by the Census. To use a layer, make sure you have Google Earth installed on your machine and then download the layer(s) of interest. The information represented here is far from perfect but you may find this a useful tool. While we have required geographic coordinates since the program began in 1966, most of the building locations have been geocoded through a project undertaken with TeleAtlas which generally provided the most accurate locations (these have a "1" in the geocode match field). Locations that could not be geocoded, were plotted from the existing points in the database. Centroids have been computed where we had polygon data--typically historic districts. The address information clarifies the district boundaries. Listed properties with sensitive locations, typically archeological sites, are not shown here. As compared to the coordinate data in spatial.mdb, the Google Earth layers are more accurate but, given the time-consuming nature of the conversion process, are not as up-to-date and do not provide polygon information. Information is current through the beginning of 2007. This information can also be transferred to GIS files with the appropriate utility.
