Description:
Abstract:
The dataset of potential sand resources in Massachusetts waters and adjacent federal waters was derived from a number of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) publications spanning 1987 to the present with one dataset originating from the Massachusetts Geological Survey. Using these maps, geologic units (a volume of rock or sediment of identifiable origin and age) representing deposits composed primarily of sand, formed by reworking of glacial deposits, were identified. These areas were then refined based on available surficial sediment data, seismic sub-bottom profiles, and sediment cores characterizing the deposits as medium- to coarse-grained sand. The age of the data are roughly equivalent to the confidence or assumed accuracy of the resource mapping (i.e., older work was reliant on acoustic data collection techniques that have now been superseded in both resolution and areal coverage).
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
Supplemental_Information:
The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan protects critical marine habitat and important water-dependent uses and sets standards for new ocean-based development. In response to the Oceans Act of 2008, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) issued the original ocean plan in December 2009. The Oceans Act requires EEA to review and update the ocean plan at least once every five years. The 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, released on January 6, 2015, is the first formal amendment to the 2009 ocean plan. These data were produced to support the development of the 2015 ocean plan.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The attribute data were checked for valid values.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All vector data are presumed to be topologically clean based on a validation of relevant topology rule(s) and visual inspection. No duplicate features exist. The data were visually inspected for missing features and misplaced features.
Completeness_Report:
These data represent the best available data for potential sand resources in Massachusetts waters and adjacent federal waters. Existing data were not available for some sections of the planning area. The older work (available in Massachusetts Bay [Oldale and Bick, 1987], Cape Cod Bay [Oldale and O'Hara, 1990], and Nantucket Sound [O'Hara and Oldale, 1987]) was reliant on acoustic data collection techniques that have now been superseded in both resolution and areal coverage. These data have not been ground truthed. Thus, surveys to collect sediment cores (which would confirm sand deposit thickness and characterize sediment grain size) would potentially result in revisions to the sand resource boundaries.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
A positional accuracy report was not conducted for these data. The older USGS data (available for Massachusetts Bay [Oldale and Bick, 1987], Cape Cod Bay [Oldale and O'Hara, 1990], and Nantucket Sound [O'Hara and Oldale, 1987]) were digitized off scanned and georeferenced maps, so the position of the potential sand resources derived from these source datasets is less reliable than the resources derived from newer source datasets (available for Salisbury to Ipswich [Hein et al., 2013], Nahant to Northern Cape Cod Bay [Pendleton et al., 2013], Vineyard Sound [Baldwin et al., in prep.], and Buzzards Bay [Foster et al., 2015]).

For the new USGS data (available for Nahant to Northern Cape Cod Bay [Pendleton et al., 2013], Vineyard Sound [Baldwin et al., in prep.], and Buzzards Bay [Foster et al., 2015]), created footprints of the potential sand deposits data. First, ran the Con tool in ArcGIS with the new USGS raster data as the input raster to make all areas where Value > 0 equal to 1. Inputs: a) Nahant to Northern Cape Cod Bay: Holocene marine (Qmn and Qmd) sediment thickness (qmiso); b) Vineyard Sound: Holocene marine (Qmn and Qmd) sediment thickness (hptuisop); c) Buzzards Bay: Holocene fluvial and estuarine (Qfe) sediment and nearshore marine (Qmn) sediment thickness (qfeqmniso). Then, ran the Raster to Polygon tool on the Con outputs.

For the Salisbury to Ipswich (Hein et al., 2013) data, erased all the data published in the report from the Qsrt (late Pleistocene-Holocene regressive-transgressive shoreline deposits) shapefile (rfm.shp). The GIS files from the report have to be layered in a particular order, with the Qsrt layer on the bottom, to see the correct extent for each dataset. Erased all the other shapefiles published in the report from the Qsrt shapefile so that it represented the correct extent.
