Abstract:
These data represent the number of vessels lost from the 1640s to present as recorded by the nearest municipality. Reliable locations with sufficient precision are not readily available for most historic period marine shipwrecks; however, most descriptions provide locale or community for location of loss. To overcome this lack of precision for historic shipwreck site locations, David Robinson (University of Rhode Island) developed a prototype sensitivity map in 2006 utilizing the frequency of reported vessel casualties by the nearest coastal municipality. For the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, this sensitivity map was updated by the Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (BUAR) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management using over 3,500 records in the BUAR database. BUAR maintains an inventory of known and reported vessel casualties (shipwrecks) within and/or near Massachusetts waters. For each record, the reported locale of vessel loss was assigned to the nearest coastal municipality. In turn, the municipal boundary was projected seaward to the edge of the territorial sea. In some instances, areas outside but adjacent to the Massachusetts Ocean Management Planning Area were depicted to present a more holistic view of shipwreck site distribution.
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of the 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
Supplemental_Information:
The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan protects critical marine habitat and important water-dependent uses and sets standards for new ocean-based development. In response to the Oceans Act of 2008, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) issued the original ocean plan in December 2009. The Oceans Act requires EEA to review and update the ocean plan at least once every five years. The 2015 Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, released on January 6, 2015, is the first formal amendment to the 2009 ocean plan. These data were produced to support the development of the 2015 ocean plan.

It contains over 3,500 potential sites and is constantly being updated.

2. In ArcGIS, created a shapefile of the offshore municipal boundaries and adjacent areas. First, erased the MassGIS "Community Boundaries (Towns) from Survey Points" layer from the MassGIS "Community Boundaries (Towns) Without Coast" layer. Then, merged the offshore municipal boundaries with the NOAA "Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary" layer. Finally, digitized features for the areas adjacent to the offshore municipal boundaries (i.e., Boston Dumping Grounds, Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Shoals, Nantucket Sound, and Pollock Rip).
